Six female inmates at the Gatesville unit in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice have written a cookbook, From the Big House to Your House. According to Amazon.com where it’s available for $14.95, the book contains 200 “easy to prepare recipes for meals, snacks and desserts…The recipes can be made from basic items a prisoner can purchase from their commissary, or people on the outside can purchase from a convenience or grocery store.”
The website doesn’t show any sample dishes, but the Austin American Statesman’s columnist John Kelso says the book “does a lot with tuna: Tuna Ball, Tuna Boat, Traditional Tuna Sandwich with Zest, Tuna Tacos, Zesty Tuna Tacos, Tangy & Crunchy Tuna Salad, Tuna Wraps, and Delightful Tuna Nachos.”
The women have designated proceeds from the sale of the book to go to a group that works to help the wrongfuly convicted.
