What substances do college students use the most?
Parents who have children in college are often worried that those children are going to get involved with drugs. Part of this concern may simply stem from the fact that most college-age young adults have never lived outside of their parents’ home before, so their parents are going to be nervous as a matter of course. Alcohol
Above all else, college students drink alcohol, even though they are often underage. Many of them engage in excessive drinking at parties, known as binge drinking. Others may simply drink socially. In either case, this reality leads to a lot of underage drinking charges and can lead to drunk driving charges.
Study drugs and other pills
Additionally, some students turn to stimulants, which are often known as study drugs. Examples include Adderall or Ritalin. All over the United States, there has been a rise in the abuse of pills more generally, including painkillers, including Vicodin or oxycodone. Such medications are legal for those who have a prescription, but many students use them without a prescription, which can lead to drug violations. In fact, since sharing prescription medications is illegal, this activity could even result in legal charges for someone who has a prescription but decides to give medication to a friend or a roommate.
Marijuana
Outside of alcohol, the drug that is probably the most famous for its use on college campuses is marijuana. With more and more states legalizing marijuana – although Texas has not – it has become easier for students to get their hands on the substance.
